Madrichim — מדריכים

The madrichim are primarily responsible for the personal well being of the chanichim and development and implementation of the informal educational program.  Each madrich/a serves as an ultimate דוגמא אישית (role model) for the students, helping them interpret their Israel experiences.

The madrichim supervise informal activities, as well as plan and coordinate tefillot and Shabbat activities. They live in the dormitories with the group and are available 24/7 for students.

One of the unique things about our staff is that we like to combine different backgrounds as we set a community of role models for our students. Some madrichim are native Israelis who have completed their army service, others are college graduates from North America, and all have extensive camp and/or hadracha experience. Together on campus, they strive to build a community with our students, enabling them to connect and grow together.

Meet our madrichim for TRY Spring 2017!

Kayla Kalkstein

Kayla was born in Florida, made aliyah at the age of 14, and currently lives in Jerusalem. After acclimating, learning the language and attending an Israeli high school, she spent a year in a pre-army program on Kibbutz Hannaton followed by three years in the IDF Education Corps. She served as a Hebrew teacher and mentor to new immigrants and later as an officer in her unit. Kayla has been a madricha in Noam for several years and looks forward to joining the TRY family!

photoJacob Sandler

Jacob (A.K.A. Milk) is veteran Ramahnik, whose love of camp and Judaism was shaped by his seven years as a chanich at Ramah in the Berkshires. It was on his first day there in 2004 that he received the nickname “Milk” for reasons still unclear. Milk is not new to Ramah Israel, having participated on Ramah Israel Seminar in 2011 and the Shutafim Ramah Birthright trip in 2014. He has spent five summers on tzevet at Ramah Berkshires serving as a madrich as well as a music specialist. He has participated in a variety of Jewish musical and educational conferences, such as Songleader Boot Camp, Hava Nashira and NewCAJE. He also spent his junior year of college studying at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem as a Nachshon Project fellow. In the secular world, Jacob “Milk” earned his Bachelor’s of Music degree in k-12 Music Education in 2016, and is anticipating initial certification in his home state of New York. In his spare time he is a singer/songwriter, a pianist and a ukulele player. Jacob “Milk” is excited to be joining the TRY team, and enthusiastically looking forward to an incredible and meaningful semester in Jerusalem this spring.

Amit cannot wait to meet everyone on TRY!
