י״א באדר ה׳תשע״ז (March 9, 2017) The Echoes of Masada

Climbing Masada and seeing the sunrise over the mountains during our hike was pretty special, but it paled in comparison to the echoes we heard in response to our shouting later in the day. Nearing the end of the trip, we approached a walkway overlooking a massive expanse of desert. Our teacher Betsalel had us all shout Hebrew phrases into the valley to the south. We heard very loud and emphatic echoes from the surrounding hills in the completely empty desert: “Masada will not fall again!” and “Long live the nation of Israel!”

These phrases made me feel very connected to the Jews who lived on Masada, and to all the people
who have died for their Jewish beliefs. The echoes seemed to last for minutes on end, as though the people of Masada were saying to us, “Israel lives on and this horrible tragedy will never happen again.”
